Ways For Kids To Play While Keeping Social Distancing

By jessica Leave a comment

Ah… “Social distancing.” It’s a thing that wasn’t even a thing like ten days ago. BUT IT IS NOW.

And now that everyone in the U.S.A. has like a six-week-long spring break or whatever it is, we have the situation of wanting to not catch whatever this thing is, but also letting our kids be kids. It’s hard. Can we have a minute and say it’s hard? So many annoying questions. How close is too close? How many people is too many? How many days to wait from that time that person flew somewhere, went to a party, forever and on and on.

Here are some ideas to allow neighborhood kids to interact outside without touching, while being a safe distance apart.

  • Ride bikes and scooters on the road. No getting off 😉
  • Rollerblade or roller-skate . No couple skate. haha
  • Kick a soccer ball back and forth across a long distance. No hands involved.
  • Everyone do a neighborhood beautifying project…paint flower pots (everyone in their own space).
  • Time people while they sprint individually in a safe marked distance.
  • Take turns writing notes or drawings to each other in (their own) sidewalk chalk. (One person has to be sitting on their porch before the next can read the message.).
  • Play battleship (everyone with their own boards) while being 20 feet apart. Yell out your guesses!
  • Use microphones or karaoke machines to talk back and forth.
  • One person fill in a Mad Libs and call out the answers from 20 feet apart.
  • Do a workout, but everyone in their own yard. Someone leads it. (Push ups, jog in place, sit-ups, jumping jacks.)
  • Hopscotch – draw it and jump it on your own driveway. Then race each other across your own hopscotches.
  • Go on a neighborhood bike ride with a mom if needed.
  • Roller Hockey — one person is goalie and the other tries to score.
  • INVENT A NEW GAME. You have to play it while you’re in your own yard or driveway or whatever. What game can you come up with? I bet your kids will surprise you!
