Regaining Order In The Home: Rules, Consequences, and Rewards for Kids

By jessica 4 Comments

Hi there!

This has been a crazy spring, and things have gone DOWNHILL in the “order and structure” arena of home life. Kind of a total zoo.

About this time, my friend Katie mentioned her new system which she called, “Regaining Order in the Home.” I immediately thought, “Now, that is what I need!” The system involved three things:

  1. Clearly define what is expected in your home for behavior and chores.
  2. Make clear and easy-to-implement consequences.
  3. Offer opportunities for kids to earn “chips” to redeem for fun things.

Kids going crazy? Regain order in the home with three steps_

I made clear rules about what was expected of everyone. And then I made a list of consequences and threw them in a jar.  No more stressing out about a good punishment for something, or yelling a literal fifty-seven times for people to put their shoes on. Now it was simple to enforce our household rules; when an infraction occurred, I simply pulled a consequence out of the jar.

The final element to this system was the “Smartt chip” earning system, of course cleverly named for our household. The kids could do extra jobs to earn “chips” to do fun things. They’ve loved this. It is so surprising to me that how the kids have flourished. Even though they are doing much more work than before, they are much happier. ISN’T THAT SOMETHING. Again, a big THANK YOU to my friend Katie Clark for her genius system!

Any way you could repost the rules, consequences and rewards for regaining order? I can’t seem to open it! I’m hoping this system works for us too!

Hi- I’m looking for your examples/printables for “regaining order in your home”. The link isn’t working. I love the different categories, but I’m curious to see how you made them specific for your home. Thank you!

Yes I just read about it in your book, found the footnote, visited your website, clicked on the link… because obviously I need the help in my home… and it doesn’t work!

I also would like the PDF for regaining order in the home. The link says the page can’t be found. Is there another place this can be found? Thanks!
