A few years ago, my husband and I decided to purchase a Berkey water filter system. At the time, it was after Christmas (read: no cash), and we were on an already-tight budget. I just couldn’t get it out of my head, though. I drink a TON of water. Our kids drink a ton of water. I was always telling them, “Go get a drink,” yet, in the back of my mind, I knew the quality of our city water wasn’t great.
Sometimes you could smell bleach in it. (A few years ago there was actually a documented over-chlorination issue with my town’s water system.) If not that, I would smell a funky mold. What’s the point of making your kids (and yourself) drink water all day if it’s doing more harm than good?
These were the thoughts I presented to my husband that January several years ago. The opportunity had come up to purchase one through my blogging friend, and he agreed: this was worth spending our dwindling saved money on. We should buy it.
I honestly believe it was one of the best purchases our family has ever made. I do not regret it for one second. Not only does our water taste better, but I rest easy (drink easy?) knowing there is no:
- lead, arsenic, mercury
- viruses
- pathogenic bacteria
- cysts and parasites and extracts harmful chemicals such as herbicides
- pesticides
- VOCs
- organic solvents
- radon 222
- trihalomethanes
or anything else disgusting in our drinking water. (Are you grossed out by that list yet?) Oh, and did I mention it’s beautiful?
(I have the “Big Berkey.”)
A few months ago Berkey contacted me and asked if I’d like to try the shower filter.
UM, YES.
Think about it – what’s the point of a shower to get clean, if your pores are opened up and absorbing VOC, toxic contaminants, bleach, and more awful gunk? Berkey Shower filters reduce damage to hair and skin by removing chlorine, hydrogen sulfide, heavy metals and other pollutants.
My husband was able to install our shower filter in about 30 minutes. (He is pretty hot and handy, though. Just sayin.) He said it wasn’t hard at all. I guess I expected it to be clunky and have slow pressure from filtering out all those contaminants. Surprise! It’s amazing. You would never know there is a high-quality water filter attached to your shower. It has several modes and my kids love the “massage” feature.
If you have been eyeing a Berkey for awhile, now is a great time to make the leap. Check out the Fourth Of July specials. These are the same discounted prices I paid for my Big Berkey. Or sign up for the newsletter here and receive updates when similar sales are running.

As should be obvious, the Berkey is significantly something other than a chlorine shower filter. Regardless of this, it is valued at about an indistinguishable level from different filters, which expel far less contaminants.
