Be A Different Kind Of Mom

Clean, Non-trashy Shows for Adults on Amazon Prime, Hulu, and Netflix (one couple’s favorites)

By jessica Leave a comment

Looking for a clean, non-trashy show to unwind with at the end of the day? If you are parents like we are, the ritual of a bedtime show may be one of your favorites!

If you are looking for new suggestions for Amazon Prime, Netflix, or Hulu shows for adults that aren’t trashy and don’t make you terrified or uncomfortable, check out our list!

Have you read my books?

ps. If you haven’t read my parenting books, check them out. I think they’re funny and great but don’t take my word for it; read the reviews. Memory-Making Mom: Building Traditions That Breathe Life Into Your Home and Let Them Be Kids: Adventure, Innocence, Boredom, and Other Gifts Kids Need.

ps. Be sure to check out Volume 1, 15 Non-Trashy Shows for Parents to watch when their kids go to bed for more ideas!

It goes without saying that obviously you are your own best judge of what you like or are comfortable with, so take this as simply as one couple’s suggestions!

Clean (or mostly clean) Shows for adults:

  • Alone: My husband in particular loves this reality show of people who attempt to survive alone in the wilderness. My worst nightmare!
  • Madame Secretary – OBSESSED! So sad it was over. I was genuinely surprised to see such a positive marriage depicted on TV. It’s a fascinating series and I would even say, “feel-good” at times.
  • Hawaii Five-O: This was a great one! Interesting characters, beautiful scenery (we now want to go to Hawaii!) and it had a small amount of language but not very much.
  • Blue Bloods: We loved this so much, about a family who works in NYC law enforcement. There are a lot of episodes, too. One or two that were a tad grisly for my taste, but overall I thought it was fine.
  • Longmire. Disclaimer: we haven’t finished it. But it’s a good one.
  • Chuck: We loved this spy series!! There are tons of episodes, too, so that’s a plus. Surprisingly wholesome. A little bit of language in the later episodes but overall nothing objectionable.
  • Sherlock: I really enjoyed the Benedict Cumberbatch take on Sherlock in a modern setting. Really interesting! Wish there had been more episodes.
  • Prison Break – there were a few icky scenes in this series. I would recommend with slight reservations. Overall it was a fascinating series and we enjoyed it.
  • The Night Manager: there was a super sketchy sex scene in I believe season 2, so keep an eye out for that. We just fast-forwarded it. The rest of the series is intriguing and (mostly) clean.
  • Person of Interest: I really liked this until the very end of the series.
  • The Chosen: Okay, we have not watched this yet, but SO many people we love and respect have said we absolutely must! This is not on Hulu, Amazon, or Netflix but here is how you watch it.
  • Poldark – This one has come highly recommended from multiple people. We plan to try it soon.
  • Leverage: We haven’t finished this one yet, but it is pretty clean and along the lines of some of the other dramas on the list here.

More Netflix, Amazon Prime or BBC suggestions for adults:

(we have not watched these, but I have heard them recommended as clean and entertaining shows for adults.)

  • North and South
  • Call the Midwife
  • The Crown
  • Turn: Washington’s Spies
  • Father Brown
  • Monk
  • Endeavor
  • Hustle
  • Pushing Daisies
  • Fixer Upper
  • Warehouse 13
  • The Mentalist
  • Firefly
  • Community

Shows we did not like:

  • Parenthood: I know, I’m terrible. Everyone in the world loves Parenthood. It wasn’t my thing… I spend my whole life thinking about parenting… At the end of the day I want to watch shows about spies and things getting blown up. LOL
  • The Good Life: It wasn’t bad, we just never got hooked.
  • Arrested Development: So funny, so sketchy.
  • Justified: Oh how I wish this was just a touch less dark! We really got into this show but there are a couple of characters and scenes that I just couldn’t.
  • Designated Survivor. This starts out so good and then takes a very sharp turn down the drains. Eventually I said to my husband, “This show mocks everything we believe in. We have to stop!” Sad, because it was really interesting.
  • Psych: This was fairly clean, but it was so predictable we kind of lost interest… I know a lot of people really like it.
  • Jack Ryan: I really wanted this show to be good. It had so much profanity, over and over. It was really well done, but I sure wish the language had been tapered down just a bit.
  • The Blacklist: Love the concept but just too dark. I couldn’t make it.

Okay, so there’s our list! What do you think? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
