Be A Different Kind Of Mom

8 Spring Fashion Picks

By jessica 3 Comments

As always with my fashion posts, I’m indebted to three sources for all helpful information:

  1. pinterest (of course)
  2. My go-to fashion mom blog, Ain’t No Mom Jeans
  3. My fashionable sister-in-law, Morgan, who constantly amazes me with her ability to seem like she actually likes me, despite how uncool I have become.

Which brings me to my next point.

The fashion roller coaster. {cue the sighs and groans}

But seriously, though. Who are these people writing the fashion rules, and could they possibly take a 2014 sabbatical so I could at least be in style for two consecutive seasons?

Can I get an “amen”??

Anyways. I used to be stylish, for the following reasons:

  1. to impress my friends and make new ones
  2. to snag a husband
  3. because I had way more time and money than one person should have

Well, as I already have a husband (who incidentally, does not actually care that much about fashion), AND I already have friends, AND who has time to make new ones, AND since when did groceries become so expensive…welp, I’ve lost touch.

But twice a year, I attempt to regain that touch. You are reading attempt #2. (Here was attempt #1).

My goal is not to try to be teenage cool again (who wants that anyway), but to add one or two classic pieces to my wardrobe as money allows, and a few other *trendy* items, if possible.

After analyzing my sources (see above), I’ve come up with a list of “perhaps-haves” for Spring/Summer 2013. If you are one of those people with fashion as a sixth sense, then ignore my silly list and do your thang. But for others, who may, like me, enjoy an easy go-to list of current items, here are a few suggestions. *all images appear courtesy of pinterest search engine, unless otherwise specified.

  • The maxi dress. I’m going to deduct five points for name (feminine needs products??), but add a few points for the ccncept. Cool for summer? check. Wear to church? Park? Girls night? check, check, check. Outfit that won’t feel tight after eating a fourth-of-July dinner? check. (Isn’t that a universal appeal?) You can also cover this dress with a cardigan, jean jacket, sweater, as weather cools off, so it can be worn for a while.

skinny shorts

  • Long skinny shorts. This is a great option for us moms. Who wants to voluntarily submit their upper thighs to critique? Here’s your out.image courtesy of target.com
  • Neon something. I know, right?!? The last thing I remember wearing that was neon was a slap bracelet in fourth grade. But I’m excited about this trend. It makes you look perky, and alive, and also, safe on a bike ride. Which is important.
  • boat shoesBoat shoes. I recommended this in the fall, and you can still rock them in summer. On your boat. And other less-nautical places. I love wearing mine with shorts and a long-sleeve T for the breezy days. Did you like my first example of something on this list I actually own right now?

sketchers

  • Bright sneakers. I said this in the fall, too. If you’re in need of running shoes, why not get bright ones? Hot pink, aqua, yellow, orange… They instantly make you look soccer-mom cool, even if the top 90% of your outfit is what you slept in. Well worth the investment if you ask me. I got my Sketchers on sale for around $25. They are so comfortable; I wear them all.the.time.

jcrew statement necklace

  • Statement necklace. You could get this one for $295 from J.Crew. Or you could buy a dishwasher, and get another necklace around $20 at Target. At first glance it might seem like you wouldn’t wear it often, but that’s not the case. If you add it to a casual outfit, viola, you’ve upgraded to a church/date/girls night outfit.

sunglasses

  • Statement sunglasses. I’m a big fan of statement sunglasses. It’s the (very little, what’s left of) diva in me. From what I gather, statement sunglasses are anything that makes someone notice your sunglasses. Color, sequins, shape, size, etc. I found some sunglasses for less than $5 at American Eagle. I also found some of my former middle school students in there, so that was awkward. I think they thought I was lost.

lipstick

  • Orange/coral lipstick. I’m excited to try this. I think more people can pull this off than they think, and it’s an easy, inexpensive way to give a modern, summer *pop* to your look. Listen to me, sounding like I know what I’m talking about.

Do you have a favorite spring or summer trend you’re trying? Found any good deals?

love the coral lipstick…makes me think of my mom who use to rock that color on her lips every time she left the house… no pinks or reds for her.
