Do you deal with diaper rash issues with your little ones? Today I’m going to share with you seven things that have really helped ease and eliminate diaper rash.
With my baby boys, I did not deal with diaper rash problems too much. There was that one time I fed Sam a half of a pineapple (never tried that again! poor guy.) But other than that I don’t remember dealing with diaper rash too much with my boys.
NOW – Ellie, my daughter, has been a different story. I have heard from a few of my friends that their girls seemed more prone to diaper issues, as well.
If your baby gets diaper rash, besides the obvious diaper creams, here are some tips and tricks to try:
- Eliminate (or back off of) offending foods. If you see a red “ring” area around where your little one poops, the rash is often the result of a food trigger. Not necessarily an allergy, but can be. If I ate spicy food while breastfeeding my daughter, I would see that rash for a few days. My sister went overboard on clementines while nursing and saw the same thing. My allergist said this rash can also occur if there is an allergy to a particular food, such as dairy or gluten.
- If diet isn’t helping there are a few things that help that acid rash. One is simply AIR. I was always shocked that even when Ellie’s rash was at its worst, I would leave it open to “air” a little (making sure nothing valuable was in the vicinity – ha!) and it always looked much better! I sort of “blot” the diaper area with a clean diaper and fan the air around a little.
- Another thing that is a surprising aid is Mylanta or Maalox. Yes, the one you take for an upset stomach! My pediatrician actually told me about this. He said to clean the area well, let it air dry completely, and then apply a thin layer of one of these and let that dry before putting on the diaper. It is an acid-blocker, so it works effectively on acid diaper rash!
- Another thing I have found that helps diaper rash is frequent baths. I have heard a lot, “don’t bathe your babies too much,” but I have to be honest – I disagree. I find that bathing them daily, with or without a very mild soap – helps their skin, including the diaper area. I always give my babies a daily bath if their diaper areas are irritated. I make sure to get the skin washed clean and VERY dry afterwards. I find it helps clear away of anything the wipes may not have gotten.
- Speaking of wipes, if baby’s bottom is very irritated, you may consider switching from wipes to a little washcloth with warm water for diaper changes. Obviously you would want to use bleach or peroxide to clean the cloths afterwards (rinsing thoroughly), but this may do the trick. Sometimes wipes can actually be very harsh on baby’s skin.
- If the rash is more of a yeast infection, try coconut oil. NOTE – for some types of rashes, this won’t help and may actually increase the irritation. But coconut is anti-fungal and will help the yeast fungus, if it is yeast. If it were me, I would want to get a doctor to confirm yeast before I tried coconut oil. But it can help in some cases.
- Finally, if the rash covers much of the diaper area, you obviously want to consider the diaper itself – is the type of diaper causing irritation?
I got to review Huggies® Snug & Dry Ultra Diapers on my sweet little Ellie, who’s eight months old, for this post. Huggies® Snug & Dry Ultra Diapers have a cute little Mickey design and are only available at Walmart or Walmart.com. I have always been a Huggies fan, and I was not disappointed in the slightest.
In fact, while waiting for my Huggies® Snug & Dry Ultra Diapers to arrive, I had picked up some Target brand diapers for Ellie. I used them a day or so, and a few times I saw some icky “diaper” crystals on her skin, after only a few hours of using them! Awful!
I also tried Luvs for Ellie. I used these for a day or so, when I noticed she was getting a red rash in the creases of her legs! Plus, the diapers were definitely not absorbent enough for more than a few hours, which seemed like a waste of money.
I was actually about to put Ellie to bed when I remembered that I’d received the Huggies® Snug & Dry Ultra Diapers to review for this post. I was so relieved to have them, I ran downstairs and opened the box with one hand, holding Ellie in a towel on my hip, just so I could let her sleep in the Huggies® Snug & Dry Ultra Diapers!
And they worked great. No rash, no leaks, and no disgusting crystals. She has been sleeping about 12 hours (!!!) and they lasted great, because of the unique Trusted Leak Lock System that holds the moisture in.
Another thing I’ve always liked about Huggies® Diapers is the tab that secures the diapers. This may seem like a silly thing, but with other brands, many times I’ve gone to snap on the brand-new diaper, AND THE TAB RIPS OFF! There’s nothing like throwing $.29 in the trash can! 🙁 The Huggies® Snug & Dry Ultra Diapers tabs are thick and secure and do not seem to have that tendency to rip off.
I will definitely make the trip to Walmart (or Walmart.com) to pick these up again.
If you have a little mover & shaker, who may have sensitive skin or sleep long stretches on the night, you have my 100% recommendation to try Huggies® Snug & Dry Ultra Diapers at Walmart.com.
