Be A Different Kind Of Mom

2020 Christmas Books + Ideas

By jessica Leave a comment

Well, I could write a book on Christmas traditions…which, wait a minute … I did!!

Memory-Making Mom: Building Traditions That Breathe Life Into Your Home: available on Amazon and Target.

Also, check out my interview with Jim Daly at Focus on the Family on Building Lasting Memories With Your Family.

Here are a few of our Christmas favorites:

For the Family

  • Read the Storybooks for Advent series. We have read Jotham’s Journey, Isthar’s Odyssey, and this year we will read Tabitha’s Travels. These are amazing. They are historical fiction but also wonderfully devotional. We usually read this at night – a lot of times my husband will read them to the kids. You have to start when Advent starts so order soon. ps. we always get behind. That’s okay. 😉
  • A few other books that are precious to our family during Christmas: One Wintry Night, The Crippled Lamb, and The Light At Tern Rock.
  • Celebrate Advent Morning Time. We take a break from some of the “traditional” school stuff to focus on Advent. We LOVE Cindy Rollin’s Hallelujah which follows along with Handel’s Messiah. I printed off Asheritah’s Names of Jesus ornaments and they colored one every day while we listened.
  • Puzzles (like this holiday one) and crafts (which I get at Hobby Lobby — no scrounging up supplies happening over here LOL).
  • Behold the Lamb of God by Andrew Peterson. Download the album and and watch the livestream. Words can’t explain how much this music means to our family. It’s the soundtrack to our Christmas.
  • Making a Christmas Bucket List. I sit down with the December calendar and put something Christmas-y on every day. Check out our past year’s bucket list.

For the Mama

  • One of my favorite traditions is to finish my Christmas shopping as soon as possible. It makes me feel like super woman and also to focus on Jesus the rest of the season. I challenge you! Make it your aim to finish your shopping in 72 hours. I bet you can do it! And you will feel so wonderful 🙂
  • I adore reading The Greatest Gift by Ann Voskamp and also Unwrapping the Names of Jesus by Asheritah. There’s also a She Reads Truth Advent study that I bet is great for personal reflection.

ps. December 1 my podcast interview goes live with my sister on our favorite Christmas traditions! You can find it on the homeschool solutions show page.
