Going through a stressful day? Stressful season? Here are some of my tips to reduce stress – the five things I have on-hand to unwind at the end of a long day!
I love my kids. Love ’em, love ’em, L.O.V.E. them. We have lots of fun together, and there is nothing else I would rather be doing with my life than being with them.
But know what else I love?
Bedtime.
Yes, that magical moment. After three (messy, loud) baths, four snacks, one bottle, two glasses of water, five stories, eight snuggly, goodnight hugs and two nice long back scratches…WE’RE FREE.
(Free to do the dishes, pack the lunches, sort the toys, and fold the laundry, that is.)
But after that…freedom.
What do you do to relax at the end of a long, stressful day?
We all know there are positive ways and negative to unwind. I am 100% as guilty as the next girl of plopping down at the counter, scrolling through Facebook, eating handfuls of potato chips, then blueberries, then chocolate chips, then a carrot stick for good measure, and then starting again with potato chips… (Anyone else do that weird pattern? Anyone?)
Today, however, we are going to focus on the positive. I’m going to share with you the five things I like to have on-hand to unwind in a positive way. Let’s focus on each of the five senses.
- Something to touch – Epsom Salts Bath. I am become OBSESSED with detox Epsom salt baths. It is truly calming. You can pick up Epsom salts anywhere, and in twenty minutes have a nice, relaxing bath that will relax your body and mind. I do this a few times a week now!
- Something to smell – This is personal preference, obviously. But two smells that I find calming are lavender (which you can apply through a diffuser) and vanilla. Yup, the plain old vanilla you cook with. I make my own, and man does it smell amazing. I feel wonderful and calm just smelling it. I also like simmering cinnamon on the stove with a little water.
- Something to look out – Flowers & nature. Cliche, but it works. During the summer, simply going outside at the end of the day to look at the sky and grass is really calming. What if it’s gloomy winter? I realized that even in the bleak winter, I can buy a cheap bouquet from the grocery store and it will really lift my spirits! I currently have a little tulip plant in the window that I bought for $2.49, and it’s gorgeous! Having these around really can impact your mood.
- Something to hear – When my husband and I do the dishes after the kids are in bed, we like to put on Pandora Radio. It is almost relaxing: the warm, sudsy water, the calm music, the adult company. 🙂 I have three favorite Pandora stations: Audrey Assad, Andrew Peterson, and Lullaby Kids (which isn’t “kiddy” at all – it’s just calming music.)
- Something to taste – I’m excited today to introduce you to a wonderful product I have just discovered: RESCUE Natural Stress Relief Pastilles.
This amazing little product is a Natural/Homeopathic remedy. I’ve just recently become impressed with homeopathic remedies, as I used one to successfully treat my mastitis this year, twice! They really do work!
This particular blend RESCUE Natural Stress Relief is a blend of five remedies that helps you stay focused, stay calm and in control. Sounds terrific, right? It was developed by a doctor, so it’s gentle and safe, non-habit-forming, with no side effects.
The RESCUE Pastilles are small, chewy capsules. They have a nice taste…kind of like a chewy, naturally sweetened fruit snack, but not overly sweet. 🙂
I have used them a few times during a stressful moment and I definitely did feel a little calmer and less stressed. I am so glad to have found something natural and non-habit forming to use. For nights when I have trouble falling asleep, I’m also interested in trying the RESCUE Sleep Liquid Melts.

Good ideas! Two things: I actually just bought the rescue stress relief gum for Dan! And I also find a glass of wine is calming and helps me relax and fall asleep faster.

Great post! I’m curious about the natural remedy you used for your mastitis. I had a bad experience with that with my son, and just trying to prepare for the future (hopefully, one day) if I end up experiencing it again.

Timely post as my stomach was in knots all day yesterday and now I am suffering for it. You are not the only one who reaches for something salty, then sweet, then chocolate at night! I needed the reminder about the Rescue too – I have a bottle of the liquid but always forget about it.

Great post, I agree with each of your suggestions wholeheartedly. I love lavender so much I told Tommy, to please, if I was ever bedridden to put it around me. Funny incident happened to me with the epsom salts. I love soaking with them too and do it often. Fell asleep in the tub once and woke up about 1/2 later when the bath water had chilled. The ends of my hair had soaked in the salts…… I was due for a hair cut anyway.
