I haven’t always been a “natural” mama.
Like most of you, I was raised on colored Popsicles and Kool-aid and plain-ol’ whatever soap and lotion they sell at the store. My mom fed us healthy meals, but there just wasn’t the awareness like there is now of pesticides, and parabens, and all that icky stuff hidden in what we consume.
Slowly, I’ve begun the transition to the greener side of life. (Note: I said “slowly.” I still like my Taco Bell. Just bein’ real.)
But one of the “no-brainers” in switching to a cleaner, healthier lifestyle was to dump the icky deodorant in the trash.
For good.
Why?
I’m no scientist, but I can read the back of my “Dove” and see there are a few alarming ingredients in conventional deodorant.
- Parabens are a common ingredient in most deodorants. Parabens have been repeatedly linked to cancer, and are commonly found in breast cancer tissue (source).
- Aluminum is another toxic, yet common ingredient in deodorants. It has been linked to Alzheimer’s and, potentially, breast cancer (source).
I also have a principal objection to the idea of antiperspirant.
In plain English, I like sweat.
Follow me here! When you sweat, you eliminate toxins. Yucky waste from your body, gone. Don’t you want your body to be rid of these toxins?
Sweating is healthy! Say it with me. We love sweating! We like sweating!
A recent book I read said you should sweat everyday to release these potentially cancer-causing toxins. This is a good enough reason for me to avoid antiperspirants in general. I say, bring on the sweat!
My husband agrees. Right honey? You love coming home to a drenched and stinky wife, correct?
Yes, honey, that’s what I thought.
For real, though. There actually is an alternative to being a stinky wife. There is a way to be healthy, get rid of those toxins, and smell delicious.
Would you like to know what I use?
I’d like to introduce you to our first ever sponsor here at “Smartter” Each Day (and my current smell-good solution): Truly’s Natural Deodorant.
The day my package of deodorant arrived to try, it was 94 degrees in good ol’ N.C. Muggy, too. I’d been working in the garden, and was about to take the kids on a bike ride.
I thought, what the heck. I’ll put this to the test pronto. And wouldn’t you know it? No smell!
Because this deodorant does not contain aluminum, it will not eliminate the moisture. But remember? We like the sweat! The sweat is good!!!
My husband also tried this deodorant, and agreed that it worked well to eliminate odors. If your man is like mine, and likes to smell strong and masculine, he may be interested in one of the scented varieties coming out soon. (You can follow Truly’s Natural on Facebook for updates.)
